Beautifully decorated cakes are a feast for the eyes and
delicious to eat. You admire the talent of the artist as
much as the skill of the baker. No wonder, they are quite
expensive and often unaffordable. If you set your mind to
learn this art you will soon be churning out beautifully
decorated cakes. A little practice can turn you into a
perfect confectioner that no one will be able to tell the
difference between your cake and a cake from the bakery.
What's best about decorating your cakes is that you can eat
your cakes all through the learning process.
One aspect that sets bakery cakes apart from traditional
homemade cakes is their lovely edible flowers. These
flowers can be purchased from baking stores or online
companies, but again, they may be out of your budget.
Besides, you may not be able to find the specific color or
type of flower that will fit with your cake~s theme.
Making your own flowers is not that difficult, and soon you
will be producing a garden of edible flowers!
For starters, you need to find a flower nail. This tool
looks like its namesake with a larger surface area on its
flat, round head. Before you start to create your flower,
it is essential you cover the head of the nail with a small
square of waxed paper. This layer will allow you to remove
your creation after completion without disturbing the
flower. Apply a small dab of icing directly to the nail
before adding the waxed paper to ensure it does not slip
off the nail and ruin your flower. Once the paper is
secured on the nail, prepare your pastry bag and use a tip
specific to the type of flower you wish to create.
Then hold the nail in the non-dominant hand, as the other
hand will be used to work the pastry bag. Then keeping the
flower nail at an angle of 90 degrees to the surface,
rotate the nail between fingers while piping. You can
choose the size of flower nail you need, depending on what
size of flower you want. Remember, a small number has a
larger size. A nail having number seven, for example, will
have a diameter of one and a half inch. A flower lifter is
another tool that you may like. It will help you remove
flower from the nail after the work is done. This looks
much like a pair of scissors.
Once you have realized the utility of flower nail, you will
be using it time and again for creating edible flowers.
Flower nail can also be used to make characters and other
shapes. With a flower nail, your cake will have the look of
any cake from the best of bakeries.
